02.25.09Real Estate RoundupThe National Association of Realtors released today their monthly survey of existing-home sales. The total number of homes sold dropped 5.3 percent nationwide in January to lows not seen since 1997. The total year-over-year fall was 8.6 percent. In the South, sales dropped 5.7 percent for the month and 15.9 percent below last year. The median price of an existing home also dropped 7.4 percent from last year to $152,100. Also, S&P released the latest Case-Shiller numbers yesterday, and they showed continuing declines in home values. 01.29.09New home sales fall in DecemberSales of new homes fell in December to the lowest number since the U.S. Census Bureau started keeping records in 1963. From November, sales dropped 14.7 percent to a seasonally-adjusted annual rate of 331,000. That’s 44.8 percent below December 2007’s numbers. In the South, sales fell 12.1 percent from last month, and were 46.0 percent below last year. As new home sales fell, overall inventory increased. 01.27.09Case-Shiller: Home prices in freefallThe S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Index has once again fallen to record lows, with the both the 10- and 20-city indexes dropping 2.2 percent in November. That represents year-over-year drops of 19.1 percent and 18.2 percent, respectively - both new record declines. 01.26.09Home Depot to close Expo storesHome Depot announced today that it is closing all its Expo stores as well as eliminating 7,000 jobs. The company has been deeply affected by the ongoing real estate slump. Home Depot Expo, which specialized in high-end appliances and furnishings, was never as successful as the company had hoped.
